All-New 5.5-Liter LT6 Engine
The all-new 2023 Chevy Corvette Z06 delivers historic horsepower in a ride as close to the track as possible. The Corvette Z06 is set apart by its beating heart, the all-new 5.5-liter DOHC LT6 engine, the highest horsepower, naturally-aspirated V8 to hit the market in any production car. This engine’s all-new flat-plane crankshaft was designed to entice drivers to push the tachometer to a lofty 8,600 rpm, creating 670 horsepower. Eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with a specific, “shorter” 5.56 final drive ratio compared to the Corvette Stingray, which enhances acceleration capability.
Flat-Plane Crankshaft
Besides its all-new dual overhead cam valvetrain, the big secret of the Z06’s 5.5-liter engine is a flat-plane crankshaft. Compared to a V8 with a cross-plane crank, a flat-plane crank can rev higher, and for enthusiasts, that’s reason enough. Glorious sound and stunning performance are the payoffs. In addition, Chevy’s flat-plane crankshaft rod journals are 180 degrees apart when viewed from the end of the crankshaft versus 90 degrees apart in a cross-plane crankshaft. That means the engine’s firing order alternates back and forth between the two banks of cylinders, helping increase exhaust airflow efficiency. Constructing a flat-plane crankshaft requires less counterweighting, lowering inertia to help the engine quickly rev to 8600 rpm. Plus, a shorter stroke and wider bore help the engine rev faster.
Racing At Its Core
The performance of the 2023 Corvette Z06 takes direction from Corvette Racing. The direct knowledge transfer from the track to the street has never been more evident. The Z06 chassis has underpinned Corvette Racing’s C8.R since it began competing in 2020. Thanks to a shared chassis, similar engine architecture, and exterior proportions, the C8.R has been referred to internally as the Z06, hiding in plain sight. The Z06 has been tested on the best tracks worldwide, from Circuit of the Americas in the United States to the Nürburgring in Germany.
Power Play
The performance envelope of Z06 builds on the foundation laid by Stingray, as does Z06’s design language and attention to detail. The Z06 has a stance 3.6 inches wider than the Stingray, accommodating massive 345-series rear tires and more airflow through side air vents. In addition, Chevy gave the Z06 unique front and rear fascias. The front fascia is designed to optimize the Z06’s cooling needs, including channeling air to a center heat exchanger, which is one of five for maximum cooling performance. It comes standard with 20-inch front and 21-inch rear forged aluminum “spider” wheels, the largest wheels ever available on a production Corvette.
