Description: It sure looks like a lot of other herons I’ve seen, but I have to admit that Lava Heron (Butorides sundevalli) is a pretty cool name.
It’s not made of lava, but it does live amongst the rocky, hardened lava flows of the Galapagos Islands.
This juvenile will keep the brown and streaked feathers until its adult matte black/gray feathers come in, better helping it hide in the lava.
