Worship at St. Andrew's Scots Kirk

St. Andrew's Scots Kirk Church Worship
While the church has been on this site for over a 100 years, St. Andrew’s Scots Kirk was established in Sri Lanka over 175 years ago and its main purpose has always been as a place of worship and prayer. More details on the history of St. Andrew’s can be found here.

The building itself may speak to us of the greatness of God but the heart of the Church is its worshipping human community. Prayer and worship is central to our weekly pattern and music is integral to this tradition. St. Andrew’s has an active music scheme with visiting choirs, ranging from congregational to professional singers, concerts and special services throughout the year supported by one of the finest organs in the country.

To worship is to open ourselves to God: to give to God our time and attention, our hopes and our fears. In our worship we give thanks together for all that is good, and we pray for others and ourselves. We give our hearts and lives to Jesus Christ and, through him, we become children of God.

You are welcome to be present at any of our acts of worship. Our prayer for you is that you may encounter and be transformed by the presence of God in Jesus Christ, at St. Andrew’s Scots Kirk.

Sunday School at St. Andrew's Scots Kirk

Sunday School takes place every Sunday, except on the first Sunday of the month, which is Communion Sunday and all age worship. The children are invited to welcome the congregation and hand out hymn sheets and Bibles and also take collection on the day of no Sunday School.

Sunday School is divided into 2 age groups,

4-8yrs and 9-13yrs.

Bible lessons are taught through stories, songs and games. Coloring pages and crossword puzzles make learning fun and challenging for all kids.

The curriculum follows the lectionary. After the introduction of the topic at children’s time in church, we carry through the same theme in Sunday school on the day. The sermon too, for the parents, is on the same theme so we are all on the same page!

Our Nativity play, Easter egg hunt and Christmas bake sales are special dates to remember!

Our Sunday School WhatsApp group keeps parents informed of all activities and in contact with the Sunday School teachers.

The Organ

The current organ at St. Andrew’s is the second of its kind and is made by the English Church Organ builders MAKIN. The Organ is a state of the art three manual instrument with a full radiating 32 key pedal board. Makin is renowned for their top of the class, beautifully crafted, instruments, and with that true sound of the English pipe organ St. Andrew’s, by far, has the best sounding digital pipe organ on the island.

Senior Friends Fellowship

The Senior Friends Fellowship is held on the last Wednesday of every month from 10am to 11.30am.

Since October 2018, the Senior parishioners of St. Andrews look forward to have a time of fellowship and participate in word games, General knowledge & Bible Quiz. Many do enjoy the sing-along as well.

The hymns, children’s talks, monthly Communion
